Timeline
November 2019 - April 2020
Location
Germany (Frankfurt)
Role
Graphic and Publication Designer – My responsibilities included all phases of the project, from initial research, planning and ideation to designing and the final outcome as well as the conclusion.
Overview
The brief is to design a typographical interpretation of Canto 33 in Paradiso, using the Longfellow translation. Introduce Canto 33 of Paradiso to a new audience using either a digital or print method.
Challenge
How can we encourage both primary and secondary users to read a complex and heavily religious narration without having a judgement?
Solution
A printed typographic publication design: ‘Paradiso 33’ reflects how a classic poetry book can be helpful while interacting with the reader. The goal is to give the readers a visually interactive experience with this classic literature poetry through its layout, illustration and use of typefaces.
The Divine Comedy, originally written in Italian by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century, is an epic poem spanning three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. It tells Dante's symbolic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise; highlighting themes of sin, redemption, and divine nature. The poem, influenced by political and social issues, remains a foundation of Western literature, offering a powerful spiritual journey.
In Paradiso Canto 33, Dante, guided by Beatrice, reaches the Empyrean, the final heaven where God resides, experiencing a transcendent vision of the Trinity and God's essence.
